Reduced-Fat Thai Iced Tea With Boba


Thai Iced Tea has become quite ubiquitous lately. There are numerous places to find it near us, from Asian restaurants and specialty tea shops to even our Farmer's Market! With that lusciously creamy texture and borderline over-sweetened, black tea flavor, it's easy to see why it has become a favorite.

We here at the Try Hard Table are certainly no exceptions. We admittedly order one virtually any time we see it on a menu and as of late, the more we drink, the more we find ourselves craving it.

Inevitably, things were getting out of hand and we, ultimately, had to agree that we won't go out for Thai Tea every time we found ourselves craving it. Plus the amount of sugar and condensed milk that's traditionally put in it was atrocious.

But maybe we could make it at home and perhaps even shave off some fat and sugar.

Reduced-Fat Thai-Style Iced Tea
(approx. 15 minutes)
(makes about 32 oz)

1 cup of loose-leaf Thai style tea
1/2 cup of half & half
1/4 cup of agave syrup
2 cups of ice
1/2 cup of prepared boba pearls (optional)


The trickiest thing about this recipe is finding the tea. You're likely to find it at your local tea shop or Asian market, otherwise, you could check online retailers.

We're using our extra-large tea infuser to make our Thai Tea. As this recipe yields so much tea, we decided to split it between two glasses. If you don't have an infuser this size, you can still use a smaller sized one; you'll just want to fill the strainer basket nearly to maximum capacity.
Fill with hot water. We simply used our coffee maker to bring the water up to just below boiling.
Cover your infuser and let steep for 4-5 minutes before removing the strainer basket.

Add the agave syrup and stir it in. Let rest for 5 minutes or keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.
When you're ready to serve, add your boba pearls (if you choose) and ice. Pour your brewed tea in and fill to about 1 inch from the top. Add your half & half to fill.
Toss in an extra-wide straw and enjoy!!

This is just as tasty as any restaurant in town and the perfect reduced-fat, cane sugar-free way to satisfy those cravings.

Yet again, we can't forsee ourselves going out for Thai Tea any time soon!
